Punk U: The Whys and Whats of Writing -punk Fiction

Instructor: Cat Rambo

Next class date: Saturday, April 22, 2023, 1-3 PM Pacific time.

Cyberpunk. Steampunk. Dieselpunk. Solarpunk. Splatterpunk. Hopepunk. Monkpunk. And more. Is it meaningful to add -punk to a genre name or just a marketing maneuver? What do the tenets behind the punk music movement add to the various genres it’s influenced? Will there be additional -punks down the line and what might they look like? What are the tropes, pitfalls, and techniques of each subgenre — and what do they hold in common? In this two hour workshop, we’ll define, discuss, and even do a few writing exercises aimed at deepening your understanding of what it means to write -punk fiction.

Cost is $99, $79 for former students, and free for Patreon members. Live classes are taught online via Google hangouts and require reliable Internet connection, although in the past participants have logged on from coffee shops, cafes, and even an airplane. A webcam is strongly suggested but not required. If there is an on-demand version of the class, you will be provided with a free coupon for it, so you have access to those notes.

Free scholarships: If you cannot afford a class but really want to take one, apply for a Plunkett Scholarship. Each class has a slot reserved for such a student, and the sole criteria is that you can’t afford the class but really think it would be useful for you. To apply, mail me with your name, the class name/date, and a brief statement about why you want to take the class. QUILTBAG and PoC candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

The Plunkett Scholarships are named for Edward Plunkett, who wrote as Lady Dunsany. Scholarship recipients will be notified the week before the class.
