Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of free-lance work are you available for?

My primary interest is writing and developmental editing; I have substantial experience in technical writing, particularly network security and Visual Basic .NET. I have taught at the 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, high school, college, and continuing studies levels. I have several workshops dedicated to jumpstarting one's creativity and journaling for self-discovery which I am glad to do for book groups, writing groups, women's groups, church groups or other social circles. My areas of expertise include creative writing, game design, online communities, literature, science fiction and fantasy, and women's issues.

What the heck is that image on your site?

It's a kittywumpus, as drawn by my friend, Becky Kosuge.

What is a kittywumpus?

To the best of my knowledge, it's an American Southern play on the word "catercornered" (aka "kittycornered"), which means set in a diagonal position. Something that's kittywumpus is more than a little askew, which is, in my opinion, how a writer should view the world.

Is Cat Rambo your real name?

I was born Catherine Ann Francis, but the first name has mutated to Cat over the years. (I find infinitely preferable to Cathy or variants thereof.) In August 2003, I married Wayne Rambo and in June 2004 I changed my name to Catherine Tigerlily Rambo. So yes.

Who has influenced your writing?

Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen, J.G. Ballard, Djuna Barnes, John Barth, Donald Barthelme, E.F.Benson, Mikhail Bulgakov, Italo Calvino, Colette, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Stephen Dixon, Ellen Gilchrist, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Grace Paley, S. J. Perelman, James Thurber, Mark Twain, and E.H. Young are among the more "literary" writers that I look to. I was brought to fantasy and science fiction by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkein, Andre Norton, and Robert Heinlein -- since then I've been influenced by Ray Bradbury, Samuel R. Delany, Suzette Haden Elgin, Ursula K. LeGuin, Stanislaw Lem, Alan Moore, Cordwainer Smith, Thorne Smith, Arkadi and Boris Strugatski, Thomas Burnett Swann, Sherri Tepper, Kate Wilhelm, Connie Willis, Neil Gaiman, James Tiptree Jr./Alice Sheldon, and countless others.

Got any tattoos?

Why yes, yes I do. A bumblebee on my forearm, Kokopelli on my upper arm and this drawing by a friend on my back.

What are you working on right now?

Currently I'm working on short stories and finishing a novel, THE MOON's ACCOMPLICE, which is set in Tabat, the same world in which many of my stories are set.
