Emotional Impact: How to Punch ‘Em in the Feelz with José Pablo Iriarte
April 17 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am PST
Great fiction can make you cry, cringe, rejoice, and above all feel the emotions the author wants you to feel. How do you go about putting more emotion in your fiction without overwhelming or overwriting? How do you avoid being too manipulative—or is that even possible when the writer’s skillful enough?
Participants will learn: 1) The role of the B story in creating emotional resonance for the events of the A story, 2) How theme interacts with the emotional heart of a story, and 3) The difference between evoking emotions and merely supplying them. Participants will also learn specific concrete storycraft and wordcraft techniques that can prime readers to feel what the author wants them to feel.
Instructor: José Pablo Iriarte. Limited enrollment (15); scholarships available.
