Breaking the Rules with Rachel Swirsky
June 17, 9:30-11:30 AM, Pacific time.
Tell, don’t show. Dump your information. Write in second person. Write in passive voice. Use adverbs. To heck with suspense.
Rules mark what’s difficult, not what’s impossible. There’s a whole range of exciting storytelling possibilities beyond them. Not every story needs to be in second person, but when it’s the right voice for the right story, it can be magic. The right information dump, written perfectly, can become a dazzling gymnastic feat of beauty, fascination, or humor.
“Break the Rules” will teach you inspirations and techniques for rowing upstream of common knowledge. You can break any rule–if you do it right.
Join award-winning speculative fiction writer Rachel Swirsky for a workshop in which she teaches you how and why to break the rules.
Classes are taught online via Google hangouts and require reliable Internet connection, although in the past participants have logged on from coffee shops, cafes, and even an airplane; a webcam is suggested but not required.
Cost is $99 ($79 for former students, which includes classes/workshops with me in other venues).
To register for this class, send an email with the following details:
- The email address that you use for Google stuff
- Which class or classes and the dates
- Whether you would prefer to pay via Paypal, check, or some other means.
Upon receiving that, I will send you an invoice.
Important! Remember every class has several free Plunkett scholarships for students who could not otherwise afford the cost. To apply for a Plunkett, which covers the entire cost, mail me and tell me why you want to take the class in 100 words or less.
