Online Classes for Summer, 2012

Basic illustration referencing Cat Rambo.

Discovered outside Anthony's Restaurant in Cape Coral, Florida.

It’s a busy summer – highlights include working with Clarion West this summer as well as a reading with K.C. Ball at the University Bookstore in Seattle, attending ArmadilloCon in July, GearCon in August, and WorldCon (along with the release of Near+Far at WorldCon, so I’ll be trying my hand at a book launch party, yikes!!)

I’m not scheduling any classes for August in order to be able to focus on the book release, but I had enough room in July to open up a couple there. Upcoming classes include: a Saturday session of writing F&SF (only a few slots left open there), Editing Basics (about half full at the moment), a Flash workshop (brand new, so it’s wide open for registration) and an online version of the literary techniques in speculative fiction class. Here are dates, times, and costs. To register, drop me an e-mail at spezzatura AT gmail.com and Paypal the fee to that address.

See here for more information on the classes, how they’re taught, and what previous students have said.

Louise and I will be doing another First Pages class sometime in July – I will post when I have more details on that.

Editing Basics:
Dates: Sundays, 9:30-11:30 AM PST, June 10, 17, 24
Cost: $299
(will not be offered again until September)
Three sessions focusing on developmental editing, then copy editing/proofreading, then career stuff. Both writers and editors have indicated that they’ve found the class very useful.

Establishing an Online Presence for Writers
Date: June 23, 1-3 PM PST
Cost: $99
(will not be offered again until September)
This is a tailored version of the class I offer for Bellevue College, Blogging and Social Networking 101. Confused about what you do (and don’t) need to do? Worried that you’ll spend all your time blogging and none of it writing? Wondering how to get the most out of what you do online? This is the right class for you.

Flash Fiction Workshop
Sunday, June 10, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM PST; July 11, 6-9 PM PST
Cost: $99
(if there’s enough interest, I’m open to creating another section at an odd time to accomodate the international peeps – if interested, please drop me the info in email or in a comment here)
Three hours of in-class writing and lecture designed to make you come away with at least three starts at flash fiction pieces along with a knowledge of current flash fiction markets and how to submit to them.

Literary Techniques in Spec Fic
July 8, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PST
Cost: $149
A shorter version of the class given for Clarion West earlier this year. Discussion and in class writing exercises designed to introduce a number of techniques to use in your own writing.

Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction Short Stories
Saturdays, 9:30 am-11:30 am PST, June 9, 23, 30, July 7, 14, 21
Cost: $249
A six week workshop focusing on the basics of writing speculative fiction short stories, including plotting, creating believable and engaging characters, world-building, what to do with a story once it’s finished, dealing with editors and markets, and other necessities. Students will have the opportunity to workshop at least one story over the course of the class and will also be writing and sharing weekly writing assignments. Session length will be 2 or 2 1/2 hours, starting at 9:30 AM PST, depending on the number of students (a full class needs more time allotted to workshopping).

Ongoing tutorial:
For $99, you get a weekly email with discussion and homework in the form of a reading and writing assignment, feedback on the previous assignment, for 6 weeks, culminating with the submission of the story developed over the course of the tutorial for a video-chat discussion providing feedback on the story, market suggestions, and the development of a reading/writing strategy to help you continue to refine your skills after the class.

If you have previously taken a class with me, you are entitled to a 10% discount on class prices, including early reservation prices.
